The President's Report (April 2015)

Each year we choose a local charity to benefit from our fundraising activities and in 2014 it was Emaus. At our last meeting, on behalf of the members, I presented a cheque for €1368 to Hazel White from Emaus with the monies to be used at local Emaus homes. Although not primarily a fundraising organisation, throughout the year JáveaU3A members support and hold events to raise money for the chosen charity which also benefits from any cash surplus generated by the major annual social events. On Sunday 12th April almost 100 of our members took part in the Bay Radio 3K Challenge to raise funds to support a sustainable farming project at the Relleu Emaus home.

Our chosen charity for 2015 is Help DAMA and at the March meeting we were addressed by their new President Candy Wright, who explained about the facilities and services they provide. Candy introduced her Vice President, Catherine Pérez Pinto, a member of JáveaU3A , who co-ordinates Help DAMA activities in Jávea.

The March meeting was also our AGM when the results of the election of the Executive Committee for this term and the vote to accept the audited accounts for 2014 were announced. The minutes of this meeting can be found on the website at March Minutes.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 29th April when we look forward to Malcolm Neill relating his experiences of navigating a sailing boat around the coastline of Great Britain in a talk entitled “AROUND THE UK WITH A DIFFERENCE

Also at the April meeting on sale and available for collection will be tickets for the Tenth Anniversary Ball at Salones Carrasco in Jávea on 5th June. We start with a Cava reception, followed by a gourmet four course meal with wine, beer and water available on demand and free of additional charge, until the dessert course is concluded. After that enjoy the live musical entertainment provided by Abba Elite. An excellent evening at a bargain price of only €35, tickets can be ordered at tickets@u3ajavea.org.

I am delighted to announce that Roswitha Bourton has agreed to become our Vice President with Tom Miller replacing Roswitha as Deputy Groups Co-ordinator. Ian Rogerson has withdrawn his resignation as Publicity Officer as has Clive White as Webmaster. All these committee appointments were ratified at the last Executive Committee meeting.

Unfortunately Val Dromgoole has had to step down as our Secretary which leaves a vacancy in one of the positions on the Executive Committee that by law have to be filled. We are very fortunate that in Marie Craig we have a very able Deputy who has agreed to take on the role of Secretary for a month so we can fulfil our legal obligations while organising as a matter of some urgency a full-time replacement for Val. Ideally we need someone with good secretarial and administration skills, a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience of minute taking and conduct of meetings. Shorthand would be an advantage but not essential. A full job description can be found at Secretary.
