Jávea U3A

The President's Report (January 2015)

Happy New Year to all.

Our final meeting of 2014 took place at the end of November and those who attended “The Extravaganza” were treated to a wonderful concert of song provided by The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir and an impressive guitar recital provided by the members of our own guitar group. There was a rumble and trembling of the earth as Messrs Rodgers and Hammerstein turned in their graves while South Pathetic entertained us with a quite outstanding production of There Is Nothing Like A Dame; the like of which will never be seen again. Huge thanks go to all the performers, musicians and others involved in organising the Extravaganza and in particular, Sally Wells who was responsible for the writing, directing and choreography. Videos of the Extravaganza are on the website at Extravangza 2014.

Prior to the commencement of entertainment the meeting voted to set the annual subscriptions for 2015 at €10. The meeting also voted for Help of Dénia to be the charity Jávea U3A will support throughout 2015.

The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 28th January at The Parador Hotel and provides the first opportunity to renew your membership, pay the subscription for 2015 in person and for those who have paid by bank transfer to collect their membership cards. Details are on the homepage of our website. The January meeting is an open meeting where the leaders of 30 of our groups will be available to explain what their group is all about and has to offer. Also our Webmaster Clive White will be set up to answer any questions you may have about our excellent website and show just how easy it is to access. The DVD Swap and Book Swap tables will be in the Antesala as usual and all members of your Executive Committee will be at the meeting to discuss any matters you may wish to address to them.

On Wednesday 25th March 2015 at 11:00 our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the Jávea Parador Hotel. This is the meeting where the Executive Committee for the following year is elected, the accounts for the previous year are approved and the Assembly decides whether or not to adopt any amendments to the statutes that have been recommended by the Executive Committee.

Any member of the association can stand for election to any of the Executive Committee positions and descriptions detailing the responsibilities and job content of all positions can be found at Executive Committee. Anybody wishing to nominate a candidate for any of the Executive Committee positions should submit a completed and signed Nomination Form to me in person by 17:30 on Friday 6th February 2015. Nomination forms are available on our website at Nomination Form, or from any member of the Executive Committee.

All members currently serving on The Executive Committee have volunteered to stand for election to the 2015 committee; thus to date, nomination forms have been received as follows:

Current Holder

President Stephen Burke
SecretaryValerie Dromgoole
TreasurerMick Cox
Groups Co-ordinatorDavid Grove
Communications OfficerDavid Woodhall
Membership SecretaryHoward Parker

You will notice that we have had no nominations for the position of Vice President which is currently vacant. If you feel that you would like to stand for election to this position but would like to know more about what is involved please contact me, or indeed any committee member. Since the resignation of the previous Vice President in November the remaining committee members and I have managed to fulfil most of the duties of the role as well as those required of our own roles which has been an effective short term fix, however is less than ideal as to function effectively and efficiently the committee needs a full complement of members.

Tom Stevenson has kindly volunteered to organise and manage the voting for this year’s AGM and by the middle of next month all members will receive an email detailing voting procedures. You will be able to begin voting by e-mail from 1st March 2014 until 18:00 on 24th March 2015. You will also be able to vote in person at the General Assembly on Wednesday 25th February 2015 at Jávea Parador as well as at the AGM on Wednesday 25th March 2015.

For those who didn’t know, 2015 is the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the Jávea U3A and we are hoping to form a 10th Anniversary Committee to organise suitable events to celebrate this milestone. If you are interested in being involved further details can be found at 10th Anniversary Ball.

Already planned for 2015 is a 10th Anniversary Ball on 5th June at Carrasco in Jávea and a Barn Dance in November. It is hoped that we can organise a summer event but it is feared that venue will again this year be an issue. We are researching places that will be suitable however if you have any ideas or indeed can “donate” use of a garden where we can hold such an event please let me know either in person or by email. president@u3ajavea.org

Throughout 2015 we will continue with the food collection days for Cáritas, and these will be at the General Assembly meetings in March, June and November.

I hope that you all enjoy your membership of Jávea U3A in 2015.
Best wishes.

Stephen Burke
