Jávea U3A

The President's Report (June 2015)

Although the Association virtually closes down for the months of July and August, the Website will continue to be actively updated. I would urge all members to visit our Website regularly as the NewsFEED on the home page really is the most efficient and effective way of keeping up to date with what is going on in the Jávea U3A. New on our Website is a page that contains all the information on our new bank details and how to make a transfer to our account.

On Friday 5th June about 200 members and their guests enjoyed a wonderful meal and first class entertainment, provided by Abba Elite, at the 10th Anniversary Ball which took place at Salones Carrasco in Jávea. Food, service and entertainment of the highest order contributed to what was a wonderful evening which raised €705 for Help DAMA. Congratulations and thanks are due to our outgoing Events Coordinator for organising such a successful event and for all his hard work over the last three years.

Tickets for the Barn Dance, the first event to be organised by our new Events Coordinator, can be ordered now and will be on sale at the June meeting. Details are available on the Website.

We are seeking nominations for our chosen charity next year. Any member can nominate a charity for consideration by placing a note in the suggestions box during one of the monthly general meetings. The Executive Committee will consider the suggestions and present a shortlist of three prior to the November Extravaganza for which members present at that meeting can vote by show of hands; the charity obtaining the most votes will become the “nominated charity”. If you would like to propose a charity for consideration, your proposal must include your name and membership number, the name of the charity, contact details for a representative of that charity and a brief explanation as to why it is thought that charity is deserving of our donation.

You will no doubt have noticed the new layout and presentation of the Calling Notice this month, designed to highlight items of interest to members and to impart information it is believed worthy of special note. We hope you will find the new format easier to read and an improvement on the previous style.

Unfortunately the position of Secretary on the Executive Committee is still vacant. That we do not have a Secretary is now starting to impact adversely on the running of our association as some of you are discovering; and the situation can only worsen. The Secretary is one of the positions on the Executive Committee that by law must have someone in place and as such does need to be filled as a matter of some urgency. Ideally we need someone with good secretarial and administration skills, a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience of minute taking and conduct of meetings. Shorthand would be an advantage but not essential. A full job description can be found on the Website. If you have the required experience and would like to be considered for the vacant position please contact me at the address below.

At our meeting last month we were treated to a very interesting presentation by Mike Evans who described his love of and involvement in male voice choirs; culminating in Mike starting the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir. At this months meeting we have our own Mike Frost recounting how Jávea U3A was started and Brett Hanson who will describe the changes to Spanish Succession Laws and Spanish Succession Tax that will come into effect on 15th August this year.

The meeting will be a donation day for Cáritas, so please be generous and give whatever you can ensuring that that any food items you bring are within their use-by date.

I hope all our members have a wonderful summer.
