Jávea U3A

The President's Report (September 2015)

Welcome to the new term. Over the summer with many groups not meeting, the NewsFEED on our Website has proved very popular and effective as a means of ensuring members are kept up to date with all that is happening in our U3A. As it is updated every time there is new information available, the NewsFEED is the most accurate method of providing our members with all current information.

I am very pleased to announce that your Executive Committee has appointed Phil Gibson-Daw to serve as Secretary from now until the election of the next committee at the AGM in March 2016. On that subject members are invited to present themselves as candidates for election to any of the Executive Committee positions, all of which become vacant at the next AGM. All members, including existing Executive Committee members, are eligible to be nominated as a candidate for any Executive Committee position. Nominations will open at the September General Assembly and close at noon on 26th November. All nominations must be notified using the appropriate form correctly completed with all Nominees, their Proposers and Seconds being members of Jávea U3A. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Website and will be available from the President and the Secretary at the September, October and November General Assembly meetings. Properly completed forms must be delivered by hand to the President before 12:00 on 26th November 2015. Candidates will receive an acknowledgement of their nomination.

There is a global appeal in progress to increase awareness and raise funds to save Elephants and Rhinos from extinction. As part of this appeal walks and other activities are being organised around the world. A group of our members including past President Peter Allin have put together a series of events taking place in Jávea to support this appeal details of which are available on our Website or from Peter.

Pat Robinson has a special offer on DVDs and there are, at the time of writing, still two double/twin rooms available on the 3 night trip to Barcelona next month. Further details on both of these are available on the Website.

There are still a few tickets available for our Barn Dance on Friday 13th November where you can twirl the night away to the music and expert calling provided by Los Rancheros. See the Website for further details.

At our last meeting we were addressed by Mike Frost who gave a brief and entertaining history of the formation of Jávea U3A. We also were given an overview of the new legal requirements as they apply to the writing of wills in Spain.

Between now and Christmas we have a wonderful program of speakers and entertainment at our Parador meetings.

Since embarking on a career in public speaking at our February meeting, Howard Parker has been filling venues across the Costa Blanca delighting audiences with tales of his life in modelling, complete with photographs. Fortunately we have managed to procure Howard’s services as a speaker once again and at our September meeting Howard will be relating a series of amusing tales from his 20 years in the Police Force; including stories about the swearing vicar and of the fake dead body. We will also be introduced to that most gentle of all sports “snooker in a police car”.

In October we have Bay Radio’s Bob James who with a long career in broadcasting has been part of the evolution of radio to what it now is: but not just on-air. Throughout his career and now at Bay Radio, Bob has fulfilled the roles of Program Director, Chief Engineer, Producer, Senior Presenter, DJ and sometimes turns his hand to journalism. Bob will be regaling us with an insight to the world of radio along with some interesting tales of his experiences.

In November we have the ever popular Extravagaza when we provide a program of entertainment that money just can’t buy.

In addition to the Barcelona trip already mentioned, the Travel Group has two trips to Valencia, a day trip to the Concentaina Medieval Fair and a shopping trip to La Xenia shopping mall. With in excess of 50 activity groups, the travel opportunities, our DVD and book swap tables, our special events and the program of entertainment at Parador meetings we hopefully offer something for everyone and the NewsFEED on our Website really is the best way of keeping up to date.

Hope to see as many of you as possible at our future meetings and that you all continue to benefit from your membership of Jávea U3A.

Stephen Burke
