Jávea U3A

The President's Report (February 2016)

I am delighted to be able to inform our members that Clive White has withdrawn from his proposed legal action against Javea U3A and that he has agreed to meet with the Executive Committee on Monday to discuss this and other matters.

Last month was our Open Day and huge thanks for their hard work in making it a success go to all the Group Leaders who were there and in particular our Groups Co-ordinator David Grove and Deputy Groups Coordinator Tom Miller. 37 Groups were present, including a model railway layout in the Ante-Sala. Having spoken to the group Leaders present it would appear that many of the groups managed to generate a lot of new members. Thanks are also due to our Membership Secretary Howard Parker and his team of volunteers, organised by Sheila Giacomelli our Deputy Membership Secretary, who made the membership renewals process so efficient and effective. In January 931 members renewed their membership and we had 110 new members, a total of 1041 members with around 360 still to renew. At the February meeting there will be two renewal desks and one for new members.

It is important to renew your membership in February, if you have not already done so, as until you do you will not be able to attend meetings, take part in group activities, nor benefit from discounts offered to our Association by a large variety of companies. Additionally, anyone who has not renewed their membership by the end of February will cease to be a member and will be obliged to pay a fee of €10 should they wish to rejoin. Details of how to renew are on the website.

Good news on the matter of Committee vacancies for next term. Roy F. Brown has been nominated for the position of Secretary which means we will have the opportunity to vote for a full Executive Committee at the AGM in March. Vacancies still exist for a Deputy Secretary, Deputy Treasurer, Deputy Groups Coordinator and Events Coordinator. If you are interested in filling any of these positions, please contact myself or any member of the Executive Committee.

Our accounts for 2015 have been audited and are available for inspection on the website. If any member has a question regarding the annual accounts please address them directly to the Treasurer by e-mail, treasurer@u3ajavea.org prior to the AGM.

Our Secretary Phil Gibson-Daw, as well as standing in as Acting Webmaster has, with the guidance of our Membership Secretary Howard Parker, migrated our membership database onto a different platform that will allow greater functionality and ease of use.

The May Ball this year is at Salones Carrasco on May 26th. A marvellous four course meal will be preceded by a Cava and canapé reception and followed by dancing to the excellent Black Glitter band. Tickets will be on sale and available for collection at the meeting next Wednesday.

Our next meeting is at The Parador Hotel Javea on Wednesday 24th February starting at 11.00am, an agenda for the meeting will be posted on the website early next week. Candy Wright who is President of Help DAMA will be giving us an update on the work of the organisation, I look forward to seeing many of you there.
