Jávea U3A

The President's Report (January 2016)

I hope that you all had a great Christmas and that 2016 brings health, wealth and happiness.

Our final meeting of 2015 took place at the end of November and those who attended “The Extravaganza” were treated to a wonderful concert of song provided by The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, an impressive guitar recital provided by the members of our own guitar group and Sally Wells directed the U3A concert party in a unique and very special version of The Sound of Music. Huge thanks go to all the performers, musicians and others involved in the Extravaganza videos of which are on the website.

Prior to the commencement of entertainment the meeting voted the Ambulance section of Red Cross Javea to be the charity Javea U3A will support throughout 2016.

The next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday 27th January at The Parador Hotel and provides the first opportunity to renew your membership, pay the subscription for 2016 in person and for those who have paid by bank transfer to collect their membership cards. Details are on the homepage of our website. The January meeting is an open meeting where the leaders of 50 of our groups will be available to explain what their group is all about and has to offer. The DVD swap and book swap tables will be in the Antesala as usual and all members of your Executive Committee will be at the meeting to discuss any matters you may wish to address to them.

I have some very disturbing news that the Executive Committee believe the membership of the U3A should be made aware of. At the November meeting of the Executive Committee it was decided by an almost unanimous vote to remove Clive White as Webmaster and from the Executive Committee. Following that meeting Clive sent some quite offensive and threatening emails to various members of the EC including one to the Secretary on November 27th informing him, that “Reluctantly, the President has given me no alternative but to take legal action against the President, the Jávea U3A and a number of people on the Executive Committee.” The communication advising the secretary of the impending legal action made a number of serious allegations that being false are of course unsubstantiated, and was signed Clive White Associates. This means that our U3A has a member who has announced he is taking legal action against the U3A and who is a candidate for a job on the committee that will have to deal with the litigation he has instigated.

Your Executive Committee now has to decide how much money should be set aside to defend the litigation instigated by Clive White. It will be necessary to take legal advice on how we must proceed and respond to the proposed actions against us, there will of course be a cost involved in that. Unfortunately until legal advice has been taken I can do no more than advise our members of the situation in the broadest terms but rest assured as soon as we can provide further information, we will.

Following the publication of the candidates list for the next Executive Committee, two members of the current committee withdrew their candidature, one committee member resigned but has agreed to continue until the AGM to complete any outstanding projects and two other committee members expressed the wish not to serve on the new committee. As a direct result of the subsequent actions of Clive White Phil Gibson-Daw resigned as secretary last week but has been persuaded to remain in post until the AGM; he has withdrawn his candidacy for the next Executive Committee which means that currently there is no candidate for the position of Secretary for the next Executive Committee so nominations have to be reopened for that position; details are on the website. The positions of Deputy Secretary and Events Coordinator are also vacant and when the new Executive Committee takes over after the AGM there will be vacancies for Deputy Groups Coordinator and Deputy Treasurer.

The May ball this year is on 26th May at Carrasco in Javea. Music will be provided by Black Glitter. Tickets are available now and details can be found at Special Events. Throughout 2016 we will continue with the food collection days for Cáritas, and these will be at the General Assembly meetings in March, June and November.

I hope that you all enjoy your membership of Javea U3A in 2016.
