Jávea U3A

The President's Report (June 2016)

What a busy few weeks in our Jávea U3A.

All the groups have been active and there has been much activity in our Travel Group. Firstly, though I should mention the excellent May Ball organised by Krystyna Stefanczyk; well attended, good food and a great band, Black Glitter, plus a magnificent collection for charity.

Our new member of the Travel Group, Charo, organised two interesting trips to the Jávea Desalination Plant and Joni took nearly 60 of us to Tabarca Island.

What fun over 100 of us had with Angela and Tony and the “Group de Danses Baladre” at Los Arcos. I hear that the visit by the Wine Appreciation Group to the Bodegas Francisco Gomez in Villena was a great success. Over 40 members of the group led by Geoff Woodward attended. I am sure that Trevor Rush will give me a full Report at Wags Too. There are some super photos of both the above events on the Website.

Shortly after this report appears we will know the result of the referendum in the UK and in this regard I suggest that some of you might like to join our Discussion Group on Friday 1st July at the Social Centre in the town. Following the sad death of Gill Birch, the new Group Leader Christine English will present the topic “The results and implications of the referendum result”. A second topic will be “The results and implications of the Spanish General Election”. The time is from 16:00 till 18:00 and Christine urges members not to be shy, all are welcome.

We continue to look for volunteers for the Travel Group and also to man some of the desks at the General Meeting. In particular, I urge new members to participate. If you are prepared to help us, please contact Karen, our Groups Co-ordinator. You will find the experience rewarding and definitely helpful in making new friends.

We have some wonderful speakers and I am sure everybody who heard Harry Duffin and Peter Davies at the last two meetings will agree that they were “brill”. This month we have Alan Oliver, subject, "The Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War 1930-1939”. (Sounds dry, perhaps, but won't be). Our speakers give their time voluntarily and deserve our support and interest. So I urge members to stay for the talk.

George Thomas, the nominee for Vice President, will be seeking endorsement. There will be a show of hands. I commend George to the membership.

Finally, this is the month when we collect food for Caritas. This charity does such good work…………Please give generously.
