Jávea U3A

The President's Report (September 2016)

Such a long hot and dry summer here in Jávea and then the devastating fires across our area. What a week starting on Sunday 4th September with the fires and the fiesta culminating in the firework display on Thursday, the Vuelta on Friday and the 3km swim on Sunday. What a town we live in !

It was heartening to see and hear of so many people offering help, comfort and accommodation to those most affected by the fires; it underlines the great spirit and friendship that exists within our wonderful community.

There have been many events organised to collect funds for the volunteer Bomberos of Jávea who lost equipment while tirelessly fighting the fires, and I know many of you will have contributed already, but if not, we have a collection at our General Meeting.

I would like to welcome back those of you who have been away, whether in Spain or more exotic parts of the world. During the summer we had a wonderful Barbeque at Quo Vadis organised by our Events Organiser Shirley King. We look forward to the Barn Dance at Restaurant Venta de Posa, in La Xara on Friday 28th October and if you have not booked I urge you to do so; places are limited.

Following the summer break all the Groups are starting their activities again and our thanks go to the Group Leaders and the Travel Team.

I know it seems a little early but the September General Meeting sees the start of the nomination process for the new Committee and I urge Members to come forward to fill the roles.

We have a wonderful speaker in Alan Oliver at the September meeting, his talk The Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War 1930-1939  is most entertaining. Our speakers give their time voluntarily and deserves a good audience.

There is a full programme of events in the coming months including the “Extravaganza” in November. Look out for the Emails and visit our WebSite at www.u3ajavea.org for all the gen.
