Jávea U3A

The President's Report (February 2017)

The Open Meeting in January was extremely well attended and we already have more than 1000 members signed up, including 81 new members. A big thank you to Karen White and the Group Leaders and to Sheila Giacomelli and her team for making all the arrangements for this successful day. I really like the model railway display.

On Thursday I went to the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia to see La Traviata. It was a glittering production with an all-star cast and Placido Domingo in the (baritone) part of Giorgio Germont. The performance was graced by the attendance of Queen Sofia. This was not a Jávea U3A arrangement, but I mention it to marvel at the fact that, in addition to our wonderful Jávea, we have the beautiful city of Valencia within easy reach. Also, I muse, perhaps someone will start a Classical Music and Opera Group within the Jávea U3A …. Imagine trips to La Scala,Verona.

The Travel Group has organised a day trip to Valencia on 28th February and I understand that this is already fully subscribed. However, the 6-day visit to Asturias, organised by Charo Brown, for early May still has places, but Mike Frost’s trip to Ávila in June is fully booked and there is a waiting list.

Our appeal for volunteers has been very successful and I thank all those people who have offered their help – we rely so much on voluntary support to enable us to continue to offer such a wide variety of activities.

I am really looking forward to Angela Chantry´s presentation at the February General Meeting entitled An international perspective on the U3A. Angela is a wonderful and entertaining speaker and I expect a good attendance.

Finally, voting for the Executive Committee is under way, but I understand the numbers putting “finger to key” have been a bit slow so far . It’s a simple procedure and takes a few moments only. Have a go……if you are satisfied with our performance.
